Defining Success
Before you start diving into habits you want to create, it’s important to define what success looks like for you. What is the intention behind creating new habits? What outcomes are you hoping to create? How would you feel if you were successful? These are all important questions to ask yourself so that you know what you’re aiming towards and can create metrics for measuring your success. Good vs Bad Habits
A habit is defined as “a usual way of behaving or a tendency that someone has settled into”. We all have habits that we’ve formed and one way we can categorize them is “good” vs “bad” habits. A good habit is something that creates a positive impact and outcome in our lives without harming anyone else, a bad habit would be the opposite. It’s quite common for us to have bad habits that are disguised as good. For example, maybe you’re working out which could be seen as a good habit, but you’re doing it 7 days a week, exerting and possibly injuring yourself (bad habit!). Defining our habits is personal and only we truly know what’s best for our wellbeing.
12 Daily Habits for Success
1. Practice Gratitude
Adopting a daily gratitude practice is an excellent habit for success. Gratitude amplifies the good things in our lives, speeds up our manifestations, and creates more of what we want. There are a multitude of benefits including increased focus, better relationships, and improved heart health. 2. Move Your Body
Successful people know the power of a strong and mobile body (in whatever form is accessible to you). Our mental health and capacity are intrinsically linked to our physical health, therefore maintaining a healthy and sustainable movement practice is key. Maybe that looks like a 30-minute daily morning walk or a 10-minute chair yoga YouTube video. Whatever movement aligns with you, picking up a daily practice will be vital to your success.
3. Limit Decisions
Decision Fatigue is a major block to success, and the world’s most successful people do what they can to minimize it. Ever wonder why Steve Jobs wore the same outfit every day? it was to minimize decision fatigue. Our days are filled with hundreds of decisions, and the less we can make the more brain capacity we have for the decisions that matter most. You can minimize decision fatigue with things like; meal prepping, pre-planning outfits, creating a capsule wardrobe, or automating some of your work processes.
4. Act As If
You’ve probably heard the term “fake it til you make it” 1000 times, but have you thought about what that truly means? Many successful people tribute their success to the bold action they book at the beginning. They didn’t waste any time with imposter syndrome or worrying about whether or not their action would work. When you’re confident that your success is inevitable you’re able to “act as if” the success is already here. One question you should ask yourself each day is “What would the version of me who already achieved the goal do today?”.
5. Pick your Big 3
Setting too many goals for your day automatically sets you up for failure. Rather than packing your list set three goals or tasks that will move the needle toward your ultimate goals. Once those three tasks are complete anything else is considered a bonus. Checking these tasks off your list will not only move you closer to your goals but will create momentum and motivation for you to keep going.
6. Meditate / Visualize
Most successful people will tell you that they saw this day coming. Many professional athletes do visualization work before the game, even Beyonce envisions her shows before performing. Meditation and visualization exercises are commonplace among successful people. Our subconscious minds can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not. Visualization techniques will trick your brain into believing your vision is your reality, motivating you to take aligned action toward the goal.
7. Educate Yourself
Successful people are forever learning. Consistently educating yourself on your craft or niche is a great way to build and maintain success. There are tonnes of free resources like podcasts, library books, and YouTube videos. Other investments into education that are common among successful people are online courses, one-on-one business mentorship, and coaching programs.
8. Journal
Journalling provides us with a space for release, reflection, analysis, and brainstorming. Starting a journalling practice will clear up brain space and boost your creativity, all key to building and sustaining success. Successful people spend at least 10 minutes a day journalling, a great beginner journal practice is “brain dumping”. Brain dumping is essentially getting any thoughts you’re having out onto the page, this is a great way to start the day because it clears up brain space.
9. Minimize Screen Time
Getting laser-focused on your tasks at hand are one of the many keys to success. Limiting your screen time will assist with it. Successful people are not doom scrolling on their phones, they’re active users of social, not passive. If you want to increase your productivity and success try the following;
- Put your laptop and phone on do not disturb mode.
- Work with your phone in another room.
- Limit your daily use time on all your social apps in your settings or with an app.
- Ensure that when you’re on socials you are posting and engaging to move your business forward and not doom scrolling.
- Use a traditional alarm clock so you can leave your phone in another room while you sleep.
10. Nourish Your Body
Crushing your goals requires energy, and we need to nourish our bodies to refuel. Nourishment is also about balance, those crash diets and super-restrictive meal plans won’t cut it. Successful people eat intuitively, listen to their bodies, and allow themselves to indulge without guilt. Skipping meals will not provide the energy you need to crush a full calendar day.
11. Organize Your Time
If you’re not a Google Calendar girlie now might be the time to become one. Successful people organize their time and ensure their schedule is reflective of their goals. Time blocking can be a useful tool to create space for both personal and work goals in your schedule. If you’re like me, nothing gets done unless it’s on your calendar, so you want to make sure you plan ahead.
12. Prioritize Sleep
Successful people prioritize restful sleep, which doesn’t necessarily equate to more hours. Most successful people sleep between 6-8 hours per night, the most important part is that you’re in a deep restful sleep. Staying awake and working yourself to exhaustion is not the vibe. Prioritizing sleep to create more energy during the day is more important. If you struggle with sleep you can try taking a magnesium supplement (consult with your doctor first).
