Building a gratitude mindset is key when it comes to achieving your goals, but what is a gratitude mindset? and how can you start practicing it today?

What is Gratitude
Gratitude is both an emotion and a practice. When we feel gratitude we’re feeling joy and appreciation. Gratitude can be practiced in many ways such as listing our gratitudes on paper or verbalizing them to others. It’s a simple practice but it often gets overlooked because people aren’t aware of its significant impact on their personal growth.
Gratitude increases optimism, minimizes anxiety, and speeds up our manifestations (what we appreciate expands). What We Know About Mindset
Our mindset is our viewpoint or perspective in which we analyze and consume around surroundings. It’s our inner belief systems and way of thinking, our mindset shapes the way we feel in any given situation. There are multiple books and resources on mindset as it’s believed to have the largest impact on our success and wellbeing.
Fixed vs Growth Mindset
What does mindset look like? and do we know how ours is impacting us? Well, mindset is often categorized in two ways: fixed vs growth.
A fixed mindset is stubborn, rigid, and resistant to change. If you have a fixed mindset you’re likely someone who is stuck in their ways and may use a phrase like “That’s just who I am”. Whereas a growth mindset is expansive, solution-oriented, and open to change and growth.
Here’s how a job promotion might play out for someone with a fixed mindset vs growth:
Fixed Mindset
- I’m not going to be good enough for the promotion this year.
- They always give a promotion to someone who has been here longer.
- I won’t be able to handle more responsibility.
- It’s not that much more money anyway.
*Doesn’t apply for the promotion and stays complacent.
Growth Mindset
- I’m going to apply for a promotion this year.
- They usually give it to someone with more experience, but I have had a lot of great results this year that I can present.
- I can create a 90-day plan to help me prioritize my new responsibilities.
- I have the data on my performance and am ready to negotiate my value.
*Applies and likely gets the promotion.
Building Gratitude Mindset
If a growth mindset is expansive, and what you show gratitude for expands, then practicing a gratitude mindset is optimal for your development. If you have a gratitude mindset you see opportunity in all situations, while also feeling appreciative for what you currently have. Here are 5 ways you can start building a gratitude mindset:
1. Start Your Day with Gratitude
Instead of doom-scrolling first thing in the morning get up and make a list of things you’re grateful for. Starting your morning with a gratitude practice sets you up with a gratitude mindset for the day. It opens up your mind to what’s possible.
2. Express Appreciation for Others
Words of affirmation are one of the five main love languages and an excellent way to get into a gratitude mindset. When we learn to appreciate others we are making ourselves more attractive to be around. People are attracted to those who make them feel good. If you’re hoping for a promotion or want to find your soulmate start practicing verbalizing your appreciation for others.
3. Measure Your Positive Progress
If you have a gratitude mindset you’re someone who focuses on the goals that are working. It’s important to appreciate each step forward rather than dwell on what might not be working. When a problem arises a gratitude mindset will guide you toward solutions rather than limitations.
4. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and living in the now. Mindfulness is an excellent practice for minimizing anxiety, staying relaxed, and practicing a gratitude mindset. A fixed mindset is often fixating on the past or future (anxiety), mindfulness will bring you back to the present moment. When you practice mindfulness you are practicing gratitude for the present moment. Curious about mindfulness? check out our post “Mindful Living in 5 Simple Ways”.
5. End Your Day with Gratitude
We sleep into our subconscious mind when we go to sleep, and our subconscious mind is responsible for 95% of our reality (but that’s a post for another day). The mindset that we’re in when we go to sleep is important! Practicing gratitude before we go to bed will ensure we’re in an expansive state. List out everything that happened that day that you’re grateful for and slowly drift to sleep as you daydream about what else is possible.
In Summary
- Gratitude is an expansive practice! it raises our vibrational energy and calls in our manifestations faster.
- A growth mindset is expansive, you see opportunity over limits and are solution-oriented. A fixed mindset is restrictive, you see limitations and boundaries and are stuck in your ways.
- If a growth mindset is expansive, and what you show gratitude for expands, then practicing a gratitude mindset is optimal for your development.
- You can practice a growth mindset by starting your day with gratitude, expressing appreciation for others, measuring your positive progress, practicing mindfulness, and ending your day with gratitude.
