Self Motivation Skills are vital when it comes to achieving your goals. How often have you written down your goals for the new year and then promptly forgotten about them? Maybe you’re all dreaming and no action. Maybe you’re not quite sure what you need to do to make them happen. This article is for you.
This post is all about the 7 Self-Motivation Skills Required to Uplevel your Life
I’ll be honest, I struggled with the self-motivation to even write this post. In my day-to-day life, I’m an event producer, which sometimes means working 15-hour days. I was consumed with a project for nearly a week straight and lost a lot of quality writing time. What helped me get it done (and posted within my scheduled time!) was connecting back to my core motivation skills.
Before I can get into what those core self-motivational skills are, we first need to understand a bit about motivation.
What are Self Motivation Skills?
Self-motivation skills are tasks or habits that you’re able to accomplish that directly relate to your motivation. There are two main forms of motivation, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation.
Intrinsic motivation is when you receive motivation from internal factors. An example of intrinsic motivation would be your own personal joy and pleasure from accomplishing something. Intrinsic motivations could be linked to personal satisfaction, mental well-being, or seeking a challenge.
Extrinsic motivation is when you receive motivation from external factors and rewards. An example of extrinsic motivation would be verbal praise from a boss or loved one, or receiving payments. Extrinsic motivation may also be the reason someone enters a marathon or competition, they’re motivated by the potential reward or medal.
There is no right or wrong way to find motivation. Understanding whether you’re motivated by intrinsic or extrinsic motivation will help you determine which skills or tools from this list you should add to your back pocket.
Why Self-Motivation is Important
Let’s be real for a second, no one cares about your goals as much as you do. You have to be your number-one hype man! Self-motivation is important because at the end of the day, only you can take action on your goals.
7 Self Motivation Skills to Uplevel Your Life
1. Acknowledge Your Resistance
If you’re feeling low and unmotivated, let’s acknowledge it. It’s okay that you’re feeling resistance toward your productivity. There’s no shame in resistance and you’re worth more than what you produce. Getting clear on your resistance and seeing it for what it is will help you accept it and move on. You don’t want to dwell or feel shame as this will prevent you from getting back your motivation and moving forward.
2. Elevate Your Space
Sometimes all you need is a cute new work setup to get you feeling motivated. Try getting yourself a desk plant, decluttering your space, or facing a window so you get some sunlight. The space you’re working in can have a major impact on your motivation levels.
3. Intentional Movement
Getting our bodies moving first thing in the morning provides an energy boost and lasting motivation throughout the day. Intentional movement is proven to help with focus and clearing our minds, allowing us to perform our tasks more efficiently. Movement is also good for our motor skills and brain health keeping us both sharp and energized for the day ahead. Don’t have a lot of time? try a 10-minute yoga video in the morning!
4. Connect to Your Why
This might be one of the most important steps, your “why” is what’s going to keep you motivated, it’s that light at the end of the tunnel, the reason why you’re working in the first place! Remembering your why (if you’re a creative visual person) could be taking time to look at your vision board. Vision boards are a visual reminder of our goals and looking at them every day can help maintain excitement and give us the momentum we need to pursue them.
5. Break Down Your Goals
Nothing is more daunting and demotivating than a giant goal that is taking forever to reach. Break that goal down into tasks and smaller achievable goals that you can cross off your list faster. This will leave you feeling accomplished and motivated to keep going.
6. Celebrate Your Wins
It’s so easy to get caught up in achieving the next goal that we forget to celebrate where we’re at. Sometimes you need to slow down and remind yourself that you once dreamed about being where you are now. Take time to celebrate these moments and pat yourself on the back. When our goals are never ending they feel daunting, when we take the time to actually check off the box and congratulate ourselves we can feel motivated for the next thing.
7. Plan Your Rewards
How are you going to celebrate your milestones? Plan it out, mark it in your calendars, and use it as the light at the end of the tunnel! Maybe you can book yourself a one-night stay at a local hotel, or plan a spa day. Rewards can also be as simple as allowing yourself to binge your favorite Netflix show at the end of a long week. Whatever reward will get you feeling excited, plan it out! and use it as motivation to get through your tasks.
