Self-help books can feel a little daunting if you don’t know what you’re looking for. There isn’t really a section in the bookstore titled “Self Help Books for Beginners”. Though when you’re early in your personal growth journey or just curious about self help books, a how-to guide is just what you need.
This post is all about 7 Self Help Books for Beginners
Self-help is such a broad category and can mean something different to everyone. My initial suggestion would be to narrow down exactly what sort of changes you’re hoping to make. Are you trying to work on general anxiety? or do you want to boost your income and financial literacy? Understanding what it is you’re looking for can help you narrow down your initial book selections. If you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for, this list has something for everyone.
In no particular order here are…
7 Self Help Books for Beginners
1. The Universe Has your Back
Gabby Bernstein is a staple in the personal development and spiritual space. She has an easy approach to growth and spirituality that feels relatable. You can boil her message down to one key concept; personal development is about feeling good. The Universe Has Your Back is the perfect book to start with. It dives into how to feel good and use that supportive energy to shape the lives of our dreams. If you’re someone who feels as if you’re holding yourself back or are often fearful of tapping into your true potential, this book is for you. You’ll finish it feeling lighter and motivated to go after your vision.
2. Discover Your Dharma
This is the perfect book to get your hands on if you’re struggling with determining your purpose or value in the world. Sahara Rose, the host of the highest self podcast, teaches the concept of dharma. Dharma in the simplest definition is your soul’s purpose. This isn’t intrinsically linked to your career however it can inform it. Your Dharma is what you’re here to do in this lifetime. Maybe that’s motherhood, or becoming a life coach, it could be practicing law or doing grassroots activism. The book outlines the main archetypes as well as how to determine which ones we’re aligned with.
3. The Light We Give
Author Simran Jeet Singh showcases how his Sikh religion has guided him toward living a fulfilling and purposeful life. He also shares how we too can use the Sikh values of oneness, love, justice, and service to live happier lives. One of the teachings that stood out to me was that of ik oankar, which loosely means one with society. It’s essentially the foundation of the Sikh religion, radical oneness among us all. I also love that Sikh people see their faith as going hand in hand with justice and the service of others. There are so many valuable lessons in this book, that would provide many insights for your personal growth journey.
4. Attached
Attached is the perfect book to read if you struggle with relationships (romantic or not). Attachment theory examines your approach to relationships and helps pinpoint what triggers arguments and unwanted behavior. You’ll learn what your specific attachment style is and how to navigate it. You’ll also learn what a healthy relationship would look like for you and build the foundational skills you need to attract it. If you’re someone who has access to therapy, this is a great book to analyze with a mental health professional.
5. We Should all be Millionaires
I cannot sing this book’s praises enough! Rachel Rodger’s approach to money is inclusive and practical while also being expansive. She touches on the systems that have been put in place to keep women, BIPOC, and LGBT people in a lower income bracket. Then she shares how and why we need to break those systems. She believes in a world where we all can and should be wealthy. If you’re in a service-based industry read this book to bust through any financial blocks and learn how to build a million-dollar business.
6. Set Boundaries Find Peace
Such a powerful book for folks who struggle with setting (and enforcing!) boundaries. In order to have healthy boundaries you need a foundation of knowledge. For example, did you know that there are different ways of having boundaries? porous, rigid, or healthy. This book provides a starting point for understanding the types of boundaries we have, the different relationships we have with boundaries, and how to enforce them. There are multiple frameworks and tools laid out in this book, the author has also since published a workbook you can use alongside with it.
7. Judgement Detox
Judgment detox should really be required reading for all adults! It’s going to help you release any judgments you may be holding on to and give you tangible practices that you can use moving forward. We all hold judgment, it’s part of the human experience, this book helps to dissect our judgemental thoughts and provides an alternative system so you can release your judgment and feel at peace. Judging yourself or others even if it’s “justified” brings your energy levels down. This book shows you how you can choose compassion instead and lifts all that weight you’ve been carrying on your shoulders.
Self-help books don’t have to be scary or uncomfortable, and they can have a massive impact on your overall well-being.
