Motherhood is complex. Society simultaneously views mothers as superheroes and villains. Expectations of mothers are at all all-time high, especially with the pressures of picture-perfect moms on social media. We also live in a patriarchal society that confines women within a binary.
Some of us may have complicated relationships with our moms because of these patriarchal restrictions. It’s possible you and your mom may even be estranged, self-care is imperative around mothers day whether it’s for your mom or yourself.
The Mother Wound
Bethany Webster, author of “Discovering the Inner Mother” describes the mother wound as “a form of cultural and familial trauma specific to those living in a patriarchy” (introduction Bethany Webster). Essentially, some women feel it is unfair that they had to live in a patriarchal society and so they unconsciously enforce these same restrictions on their daughters. We see it in language such as “just be a good girl” and “don’t wear that around your uncle”. This causes tension and shame and ultimately drives a wedge between daughters and mothers.
Mothers Day
Mother’s Day (like most holidays) has a religious history. It first began in 1907 when a mothers day service of worship was held at a methodist episcopal church. Over time the day has become more of a hallmark (and let’s say it, capitalist) holiday. You don’t need to have religious views or even purchase a gift in order to celebrate mothers day. Mother’s day should be about connection and celebration, whether you’re celebrating your own mother, a mother-like figure in your life, or yourself.

discovering the Inner Mother: A Guide to Healing the Mother Wound and Claiming your Personal Power by Bethany Webster
As previously mentioned we all have patriarchal wounds that some of us may unconsciously pass down to our children. This is a great gift if your mother struggled with her relationship with her mom, or even a gift for yourself if you struggle with your relationship with yours. Author Bethany Webster is a global expert on the mother wound, aside from her book she has a digital course and offers 1:1 mentoring. Reading this book will help you understand your dynamic with your mother on a deeper level and give you the tools to better your relationship.
Storyworth
This is such a beautiful and thoughtful gift that can be passed down to future children as a keepsake. Storyworth is a year-long subscription where you choose weekly question prompts that get emailed to your loved one. Over the course of the year, their responses along with pictures are collected and turned into a gorgeous physical book that you can keep. If the monthly subscription price is out of budget you can do something similar with a handwritten journal like this one from amazon.
Mother Daughter Retreat
Treat you and your mom to a one-night stay at a local hotel or Airbnb. You can order room service in your hotel robes or cook a meal together if you opt for an Airbnb. For bonus retreat vibes you can bring a facial spa kit and some form of a connection card game for optimal bonding. If staying somewhere is out of budget you can turn your home into a retreat space!
The Adventure Challenge (Family)
If you’re looking to spend more time with your mom this year then this is the perfect gift. The Adventure Challenge contains 50 surprise adventures inside both indoors and outdoors, at home or on the road. There are prompts on each page that hint toward the type of activity and cost and then you scratch off to discover what it is. There is also a placeholder next to each activity for a polaroid image so you can document your adventures together. You can give the gift of ongoing quality time with this booklet.
Self-Care Subscription Box
There are an abundant amount of self-care boxes that you can get for mom this year. There are monthly subscription boxes like Therabox or you can opt for a one-time purchase. If you’re looking for a spa-themed self-care box JOYLUA would be perfect, or if makeup is more your mom’s thing try Ipsy. Most subscriptions will let you customize the types of products you’re looking for.
You do not need to purchase a gift in order to celebrate mother’s day, do what feels good and is accessible to you this year.
