Why You Need a Gratitude Practice
Gratitude is the language of our soul, it’s our true essence and a great way to regulate our nervous system. We often view gratitude as an emotion but it’s also a practice, an exchange, and a way of being. There are a multitude of proven benefits to a gratitude practice including increased heart health, decreased anxiety, better relationships, and clearer decision-making. How to Practice Gratitude Every Morning in 3 Ways
Practicing gratitude in the morning will set the tone for the day ahead, allowing for ease and joy. Here are three simple practices to show how to practice gratitude every morning.
1. Practice Mindfulness / Meditation
Mindfulness is the art of slowing down and being in the present moment and is inherently a gratitude practice. A simple mindfulness practice is to be still and take in your surroundings. What do you see, smell, and hear? are you able to practice being still in the moment without judgment? Mindfulness allows us to take in the beauty within and around us and feel deeper gratitude for life. If this practice feels too advanced in the beginning, you can follow along with a 5 or 10-minute gratitude meditation on YouTube.
2. Write in a Gratitude Journal
Journaling first thing in the morning clears space in your mind and helps define an intention for the day. Rather than jumping right into a gratitude journal you can start by “brain dumping” all the thoughts you’re having onto the page. After you’ve cleared through all the noise you can write in your gratitude journal. A gratitude journal is where you write out what you’re grateful for and share your thoughts about it. You can do this with a structured gratitude journal that will have prompts already outlined for you, or just free write in a blank journal.
3. Recite Gratitude Affirmations
Affirmations are a fun way to start the day and reinforce new belief systems. We know that our thoughts are proven to drive our actions, which then create our results. Affirmations are a great way to shift our thoughts and mindset to create actions and results that align with our goals. Since gratitude is also proven to create more of what we want, gratitude affirmations are a powerful combination and tool to create real change in our lives.
What People Get Wrong About Gratitude
One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to gratitude is that people think it means they’re settling. Many people worry that if they express gratitude for where they’re at or what they have it means that they are content and complacent. In reality, expressing gratitude is only going to create more of what you want. Gratitude is an expansive emotion, ingratitude is restrictive.
