There are 15 Presuppositions of NLP, but you don’t have to understand them all in order to receive life-changing benefits.
This post is all about Using 3 Presuppositions of NLP to Completely Change Your Life
NLP otherwise known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of the mind and our physiology, and learning to use our mind to support us in achieving our goals. NLP (even though it is often discredited) is a powerful personal development tool. I’ve personally received immense value from it, and I always encourage people to try it out and see what resonates with them and what doesn’t.
Using NLP techniques can drastically improve your relationships, and communication skills, help you conquer limiting beliefs, and achieve your goals.
What are the Presuppositions of NLP?
The presuppositions of NLP are a fancy way of saying; beliefs or plausible ideas. These beliefs serve as a foundation that which those within the NLP world build their work, ideas, and frameworks around.
3 Presuppositions of NLP that Will Change Your Life
There are actually 15 presuppositions of NLP, but I’m going to focus on three that I believe are absolutely life-changing.
1. There is no such thing as unresourceful people, only unresourceful states.
I LOVE this, it essentially says that you’re capable of anything with the right support. An example of this that I heard from NLP specialist David Key is about a toddler and their dad. The dad left the toddler alone in the living room for a few minutes and when he came back he discovered the toddler writing all over the living room walls!
Does this mean the child is “stupid”, or lacks in common sense? No, it means they were under-resourced. When we have the right support, in this case, paper, we are able to achieve our intended outcome (for the toddler that was coloring).2.
2. The resources needed by an individual to achieve their outcome, in any situation, is already inside them.
You already know what to do, you just need to learn to access your intuition. We get so caught up in learning about the latest book or podcast episode that’s going to help us find success. In this digital age, we’re always seeking external validation and knowledge from third-party sources that we’ve disconnected from our own intuition.
In NLP we believe that we already have the resources and knowledge we need to achieve our goals within us, we just need to learn to access them. This is so empowering! The next time you’re wondering what you should do, try unplugging for the day and connecting with your inner knowing.
3. There is no failure, only feedback.
Any result you receive can be considered an achievement, it’s only a matter of whether or not it’s the achievement you intended to receive. What happens when you “fail”? you;
- learn something new
- cleared the path to your success
- took aligned action
- proved your bravery
- stepped outside your comfort zone
- expanded your capacity
- learned what doesn’t work
All of this is data that will push you toward the right action and guide you toward success.
Does NLP really work?
NLP was created by Richard Bandler in the 1970s as an approach to therapy. Since its inception, there have been countless studies created on it both crediting and dis-crediting the technique. There is no real way to say whether or not the methodologies work because of this. As with any personal development tool you should try it out for yourself and see what works for you, I also always suggest using new techniques alongside your therapist for optimal impact.
